After 15 years growing West Island Cable from the original grassroots wireless network to our current state of the art fibre to the home (FTTH) we are extremely pleased to announce exciting changes are on the horizon for West Island Cable, the community at large and our family …

Challenges with wireless services lead us to strive to build a future proof option for the community. Gigafy Bamfield Project was supported by both the BC Ministry of Citizen Services and the federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED), without their generous guidance and support this would not have been possible. We are so incredibly pleased to have successfully built a long-lasting solution for the community we hold so dear.

We would like to send heartfelt thanks to our customers who have supported us over the past 15 years and the community at large for all your support.   It truly has been a pleasure being able to raise our children and serve our community as the only local internet service provider -which would not have been possible without your support. Together we have brought world-class internet service to Bamfield! Thank you!

Over the past few months Eric and Megan have been working closely with City West, who have partnered with the Strathcona Regional District to build the Connected Coast Project. This will bring the same top-notch connectivity to 139 rural and remote coastal communities, including 48 Indigenous communities – representing 44 First Nations – along the BC coast from north of Prince Rupert, to Haida Gwaii, south to Vancouver, and around Vancouver Island. This is an extremely exciting project!

We have followed the Connected Coast Project since inception as the benefits the project will bring to remote and rural communities along the coast is substantial. We were so pleased to begin conversations with City West as we know how important reliable communication services are on BC’s coast.  City West was excited about West Island Cable’s FTTH network and our proactive approach toward Connected Coast Project, as we are one of the few examples of a local community ISP already prepared to receive Bamfield’s designated Connected Coast drop when it arrives.

This acquisition with City West and connection to the Connected Coast Project will provide Bamfield residents several new opportunities. City West service offering includes unlimited internet, traditional TV/cable services (200 HD Channels) and fibre optic quality phone service all for a very reasonable monthly price. Please see citywest.ca for more information. In the near term, customers will continue to receive the same excellent friendly service and will not see any immediate changes to services or billing.

Moving forward, Lake Butler will be taking on the role of Operations Manager for West Island Cable ensuring we continue to have friendly timely customer service. Eric has been hired as the new Operations Manager of West Connect Infrastructure Corp. which is the construction division of City West.

As many of you know, in the life of a Bamfield parent the time eventually comes for high school… and the decisions that entail.  Grace is now a graduate of Bamfield Community School and is looking forward to attending high school in September. The universe works in mysterious ways, as the stars align, we will be looking to relocate for the fall to provide more opportunities for our growing children.
